We’re a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports, educates, and celebrates neurodivergent individuals by fostering understanding and building a more inclusive world
HOW IT STARTED
How Different Brains Began
Different Brains was born from a father’s personal journey to understand his child’s diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome. Founded by Dr. Harold “Hackie” Reitman, the organization started as a film project and evolved into a platform for education, advocacy, and support for the neurodivergent community.
Over time, Different Brains has grown into a trusted resource, sharing stories, expert insights, and mentorship opportunities that celebrate neurodiversity and promote inclusion.

MEET OUR FOUNDER
The Heart Behind Different Brains
Dr. Harold “Hackie” Reitman was a retired orthopedic surgeon, former professional heavyweight boxer, author, and passionate neurodiversity advocate. His journey with Different Brains began when his child was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome—an experience that reshaped his understanding of neurodiversity and inspired his life’s work.
What started as a personal quest for answers evolved into a broader mission: to educate, support, and celebrate individuals whose brains function differently. From producing documentaries and writing books to hosting interviews with experts and advocates, Dr. Reitman dedicated himself to fostering inclusion and understanding. Through Different Brains, his legacy continues as we amplify neurodivergent voices and create resources that help bridge gaps in awareness, advocacy, and real-world support.
